Charlie Byrd is a remarkable musician, who is as skillful in classical guitar concert work as he is in jazz. He took up classical guitar in 1947, and beginning in 1950, when he moved to Washington, DC, he studied with Sophocles Papas, one of the best known teachers of that demanding skill.

Byrd progressed so well that Segovia invited Byrd to study with him in Italy in 1954. He continued his classical guitar work while also developing his use of the classical fingering style for unamplified jazz guitar.

Today he is known as one of the all time masters of the guitar. The rare tracks presented here were recorded in 1959 for the audiophile Everest label and feature Byrd tackling the popular style of the day, Bossa Nova, with remarkable ease. On these two tracks Byrd plays Spanish guitar backed by the big band of Woody Herman. Featured is "Bamba Samba Bossa Nova" and the Samba inspired "Love Song Ballad."
