A handy little package of made-in-DC goodness from one of the leading lights of our "transient" category of artists, Bo Diddley. Mr. Elias McDaniel made his home in DC from somewhere around 1958 to somewhere around 1967, drawn to the city by its location convenient to both ends of the east coast blues circuit.

In his home on Rhode Island Avenue NE, Diddley built his own recording studio and threw the doors open to local musicians like Billy Stewart, Sandra Bears of the Jewels, and Marvin Gaye's group the Marquees--even as he continued to trek up to Chess Records in Chicago to make most of his own recordings.

The two LP's included on this CD, on the other hand, were recorded entirely in DC. And like everything recorded in DC, away from the major-mabel overseers, they defy the easily categorized flavors of the music business.

"Gunslinger" is considered a creative peak for Bo Diddley, bringing his sonic innovations and singular style to an R&B, roots and even country-western songbook. "Lover" is another collection of assured, loose-jointed rock 'n' roll, similarly revered by Diddley's musical descendants.
