Mikey Dread (Michael Campbell) was an irrepressibly effervescent roots reggae performer, producer, DJ and radio personality. 

As a young engineer at Jamaica's JBC radio networks, Campbell was unhappy with the programming selection which all but ignored the fast-growing canon of Jamaican roots music in the mid-1970s. He convinced the Corporation to give him a weekly program, known as "Dread At The Controls", which quickly became the most popular on the island. 

Not only did the program help fuel the explosion of reggae music in Jamaica and beyond, it made Mikey a star with his boisterously poetic, staccato emceeing over instrumental tracks, rewinds, and needle drops. These signature DJ drops or snippets became an art form in themselves and have been popular in all kinds of reggae, club, and hip-hop music ever since. 

Inevitably, Campbell became one of the world's most distinctive and beloved reggae DJs and producers, while invading the UK scene of the late '70s to work with bands like Aswad and memorably, The Clash. In the 80s he appeared on the most timeless material from the On-U Sound family of experimental UK reggae and dub artists like Singers & Players, Dub Syndicate, and African Head Charge. 

Dread at the Controls was Campbell's second LP, here presented in a 180g audiophile re-pressing with exact replica cover art.
