In the fall of 1997 after touring with Boys Life, Kerosene 454 went into Inner Ear Studios to record "At Zero" with J. Robbins (Jawbox, Magpie Cage Studio), Don Zientara, and Juan Carrera (Warmers, Slowdime Records). The album came together amid a shifting D.C. music scene, which shaped the writing and recording of the record. Whereas earlier records tried to faithfully recreate their live sound, "At Zero" found K454 letting go and letting the studio be its own creative force.
