Towards the close of the 1960s, the coolJamaican sound of Rock Steady was usurped by a jumpier, less sedate style that quickly became widely known as reggae. Today these early reggae stylings are commonly called skinhead reggae, a nod to the music's popularity among working class British youth, and also to connote the time before dreadlocks came to dominate the Jamaican scene.
