Originally released in 1977. Recorded at Black Ark Studios, Jamaica.
The greatest roots reggae LP ever recorded--the beauty, depth, and intensity of the performances matched by daring and otherworldly production and arrangements.
Rejected outright by Lee Perry's major-label backers at the time, the "Heart of the Congos" LP went through no less than six markedly different mixes and edits--some transcendent, some blasphemous--before ever seeing a proper, definitive worldwide release, nearly 20 years after its completion.
This Triple-CD edition expands on that release, another 20 years on. Disc One features the "definitive" mix and edit of the original 10-track LP--chronologically, the second of its iterations.
Disc Two includes three out-takes from those recording sessions, "Don't Blame It On I", "At The Feast", and "Nicodeemus", each of which is a highly prized roots classic in its own right. It also features extended discomixes of the album cuts "Solid Foundation" and "Congoman" originally released on Jamaican 12" singles, along with two alternate dub takes of "Row Fisherman" and one of "Ark of the Covenant", originally from the B-sides of Jamaican 7" singles.
Disc Three is a real treasure, entirely unique to this CD-format edition: the very first mix and edit of the LP, a more intimate, ethereal, lo-fi mix. Until now, this first version could only be heard by obtaining the original LP (some copies of which bore the hand-painted yellow stripes on the cover, re-produced for this edition), the prices for which have crept up into four figures.
A 16-page booklet is also included.
