The earliest recordings as bandleader from DC maestro Andrew White. The local ensemble was discovered by Cannonball Adderley, and with his endorsement earned their first recording contract when White was still a teenager.

The JFK Quintet's style retained the inherent swing of jazz, while at the same time the group was compulsively forward-facing and avant-garde, inspired by the freshness and possibility of the Kennedy era's dawn.

The trumpet-alto front line blends well in the crisp, frequently boppish ensembles. It made for a fruitful contrast in a band full of rhythmic drive and vitality, with a strong musical personality and identity.
