A DC native and lifelong resident of the area, mandolinist John Duffey founded two of the most influential groups in modern bluegrass music, The Country Gentlemen and The Seldom Scene. His performing and recording career spanned 40 years. True to his DC roots, his bands defied the conventions of the music industry, adapting traditional country musical forms to a variety of popular styles. A charismatic, respected leader and large man with a large voice playing the tiniest instrument on stage, Duffey's trademark jestering rounded out his instantly disarming stage presence.
