Our favorite new reggae arrival of 2022 was Mungo's Hi-Fi's "Antidote". It's a dub concept album from the peak of the pandemic that looked beyond the chaos and sickness to offer a paean to the healing balm--sonic, medical, social, lyrical--and the human spirit and ingenuity that brings it forth.
The dubs are so lovingly crafted that the concept shines through -- and a sound system already on a long upward arc suddenly hit a whole new level at the most improbable time. One reason for that is the vocal performances that provided "Antidote"'s source material, from a roster of legendary performers (Lady Ann, Prince Alla, Johnny Clarke) along with Mungo's always eye-opening stable.
That those originals would see release in a companion collection was a tantalizing prospect, and now here it is. Along with the antidote, it carries powerful lyrical reminders of the reasons it's needed. Dynamite from start to finish.
